- CC Sabathia The Yankees are going to need starts like this from The Big Man down the stretch, especially at home — 6 strong innings, 7 strikeouts, 1 BB and 1 ER. History and experience tells you odds are this needed to be a low-scoring game against Felix Hernandez, at least until we could get into their bullpen. Sabathia did just that with a gutty performance and hopefully a sign of things to come as the dog days are approaching.
- Mark Teixeira Tex’s bounce-back season continues. Today’s game-winnning blast was his first hit ever off Fernando Rodney, snapping an 0-10 skid against the Seattle reliever.
- The Bullpen Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances, and Andrew Miller got it done, which is exactly according to plan. They got the last nine outs, keeping the Mariners off the board while Tex worked his magic.

Refsynder Sent Down
With Carlos Beltran back in the lineup, Rob Refsynder was optioned to AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre. According to Joe Girardi, the combination of Stephen Drew and Brendan Ryan gives the club more defensive flexibility in the infield, as both can play multiple positions.
“I wasn’t ever promised anything. I never had a meeting saying, ‘This is your job,’ or anything. I came with the mindset every day that I’ve got to get better and prepare and help the team win. Obviously as a young player you want to come up and make a good impression and play well and win a job, but like I said, I wasn’t ever promised anything. It’s a good experience, and I got my feet wet.” ‐ Rob Refsynder (h/t: Chad Jennings/LoHud)
