Mark Teixeira blasts a grand slam off Seattle's Felix Hernandez at Safeco Field in Seattle on June 1, 2015

Game 52 | 27-25, 1st : Huh? The Yanks can’t scratch out a run against Oakland’s Jesse Chavez yesterday, but clean King Felix‘s clock tonight in Seattle for a 7-0 lead after 5 innings? Michael Pindea started against former mentor Hernandez and was lights out until losing the plot in the bottom of the 7th inning, allowing 2 runs and leaving 2 on with on outs before getting the hook.

Justin Wilson took over and blazed mid-90s fastballs to extinguish any Seattle hope for a bigger inning. Dellin Betances took the reigns from there, and in an at-bat of beauty Robinson Cano had no chance at the plate against the fire-balling righty, who took out the former second baseman of the Yankees in 4 pitches, all clocking 97mph plus.

“I don’t know what happened,” (Felix) Hernandez said after suffering his first loss to the Yankees since 2012. “I just lost my command and fell behind a lot of times. A lot of walks killed me. I made a lot of mistakes.”

  • Michael Pineda   You *know* this start was circled on Big Mike’s calendar the minute he learned about it. The tantalizing jewel of the Jesus Montero trade of 2011 came full circle tonight, after years of inquiry and false starts, he showed Seattle just what they gave up on. And he did it against their best, if not MLB’s best. Pineda’s final line was 6IP, 7 hits, 2 BBs, and 9 strikeouts on 97 pitches — 64 for strikes.
  • Mark Teixeira   There is serious ownage going on with Mark Teixeira over Felix Hernandez. Tex blasted a grand slam in the 5th inning for his 6th career jack off Felix, and an average of .303 (20 hits in 66 at-bats) against the 2010 Cy Young Award winner.
