- Nathan Eovaldi In a second strong start after the meltdown in Miami, Eovaldi kept the Astros down with great control on some serious heat — 98+ mph stuff with good control of his breaking pitches.
- Chris Young Huge, let me repeat: HUGE — 3-run homer in the 7th inning for the first time a Yankee touched home plate in the series — 16 innings to be exact. Young turned on an inside fastball that had a little too much of the plate and made Houston reliever Will Harris pay, smoking the pitch over the high scoreboard in left and into the cheap seats. Harris had sick numbers coming in, keeping opponents to a 0.96 BA.
- Chasen Shreve What a gem this young left-hander turned out to be as an ‘extra’ in the Manny Banuelos for David Carpenter trade. Carpenter shined early but a string of ineffective outings but was DFA’d and ultimately traded to the Washington Nationals for minor league second-baseman Tony Renda. Carpenter was the bigger piece in the deal for New York, but Shreve is performing above and beyond expectation, and then some. You just can’t predict baseball trades, either, huh? Shreve struck out the side tonight, in a pressure situation.
- Dellin Betances Entering in relief of Justin Wilson in the bottom of the 8th, Betances struck out the dangerous Evan Gattis with the tying run on second. He then cruised though a scoreless 9th for a 4-out save, his 5th of the season.
