Game 112 / 61-51 / 2nd / -0.5GB : It’s been a while since the Yankees were looking up at first place in the division, July 1st to be exact. The red-hot Blue Jays hammered Oakland while New York’s slumping bats fell to Danny Salazar and the Cleveland Indians, 2-1. CC Sabathia deserved a better fate. The Big Man scattered 9 hits over 6 full innings, pitching into and out of trouble, but keeping the Yanks in the game.

MEMORY LANE : On today’s date in 2004, the Yankees signed Jose Tabata as an amateur free agent. On July 26, 2008, Tabata was part of a six-player trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates that brought Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte to New York. To make room on the roster, the Yankees optioned Brett Gardner to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and DFA’d reliever LaTroy Hawkins
