Oakland's Brett Lawrie rips a solo homer inside the left-field foul pole to give the A's a 4-3 lead in the 10th at Yankee Stadium on July 7, 2015

Game 83 | 44-39, 1st : You don’t get many chances to win a ballgame started by Sonny Gray, and the New York Yankees blew an opportunity to do just that tonight. And in the most unlikely of circumstances — by leading Gray 3-2 going into the 7th inning, then having two of your most reliable bullpen arms give it up — both on mistake pitches that resulted in solo home runs for a maddening 4-3 loss.

Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

A’s 4, Yankees 3

After a Joe Girardi quick hook on starter Nathan Eovaldi after 5.1 innings and a 3-2 lead, the normally dependable bullpen lost it. Chasen Shreve served up the tying home run to Billy Butler, and Dellin Betances left one over the plate for Brett Lawrie in the top of the 10th, and that was that. The Yankees made it interesting in the bottom of the 10th, with runners on first and second with two out, but Mark Teixiera struck out swinging on full-count change up from former Yankee Tyler Clippard.

“All the other guys I faced, I felt like I was doing better. A better job getting ahead. There, I just left that pitch over the plate. Bad location. … Right down the middle. It didn’t do much. Really bad pitch.” ‐ Dellin Betances
