Mark Teixeira snares a liner off the bat of Josh Reddick, then tags Billy Butler to complete the double play at Oakland on May 31, 2015

Game 51 | 26-25, 1-T : After doing nothing at the plate for 8 innings, the Yankees had two shots to tie the game in the 9th, but couldn’t come through in a 3-0 loss at Oakland. It was a tough loss for starter Adam Warren, who had his fourth quality outing in a row, but the New York bats had no answer for A’s starter Jesse Chavez.

The loss drops the Yanks to 26-25 and into a first place tie with the pesky Tampa Bay Rays. After sweeping the Royals in a 3-game series, the club dropped the 4 game series, 3 games to 1.
Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

A’s 3, Yankees 0

  • Adam Warren   With no help from the offense, Warren drops to 3-4 despite another strong outing overall. He scattered 6 hits, struck out 4 and walked only one. A mistake pitch to catcher Stephen Vogt that resulted in a 2-run homer was enough to decide the game.
  • Ramon Flores   After a great defensive major league debut yesterday, Flores knocked his first big league hit with a single to left off Jesse Chavez in the top of the second inning. When the Yankees’ dugout called for the game ball, Brett Gardner pulled the old ‘switch the ball and throw the wrong one in the stands’ deke. Never gets old.
  • Alex Rodriguez   A-Rod continued his consistent hitting with a 2-4 afternoon, raising his BA to .281. His single in the 9th gave a sliver of hope for a game-tying rally, but was stranded at second when pinch hitter Brian McCann struck out, and Garrett Jones popped up to end it.
  • Mark Teixeira   Tex made an unassisted double play on a pitch that was smoked by Josh Reddick, as he stabbed it and swung around to tag Billy Butler who was leaning the wrong way. Teixeira also made a diving grab to rob Ben Zobrist of a hit in the first inning.

FOOTNOTES : With Oakland in the rear view mirror the Yankees head north for a 3 game showdown with the Seattle Mariners. Michael Pineda will face M’s ace Felix Hernandez in the opener … Joe Girardi benched the slumping Stephen Drew (.156) today in favor of Jose PirelaMasahiro Tanaka will re-join the rotation in Seattle, and someone will likely be sent to the bullpen, either Chris Capuano or Adam Warren, but Girardi has been impressed with Warren’s recent starts, and Capuano is yet to find a groove since coming off of the DL.
