Brian McCann launches a two-run home run to right field, giving the Yankees a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on May 8, 2015 at Yankee Stadium

Game 30 : Starter Adam Warren had trouble securing a 5-0 lead, but New York’s reliable bullpen came to the rescue again to ensure a 5-4 win over visiting Baltimore. After the Orioles plated 2 runs in the fifth, Warren was lifted with 2 on and 2 out. Justin Wilson ended the drama there, but was tagged with 2 earned runs himself in the 6th when Chris Martin relieved and allowed a Jimmy Paredes grounder up the middle that scored 2 more runs.

The Yankees put 3 on the board in the first inning via an Alex Rodriguez sac fly that plated Jacoby Ellsbury, and a Brian McCann blast to right with Brett Gardner on base. McCann, who was green-lighted on 3-0 count, clubbed a Miguel Gonzalez 91mph four-seam fastball. Carlos Beltran‘s bases-loaded double in the third scored 2, and the O’s bullpen shut New York down for the remaining innings.
Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

Game 30 Notes

  • Brian McCann   Big fly in the bottom of the first gives Yankees a 3-0 lead.

  • Alex Rodriguez   A-Rod came within inches of career home run number 662 in the 5th inning.
  • Carlos Beltran   Don’t give up on this guy yet. While his stat line is depressing, he is definitely showing better swings. The O’s intentionally walked Brian McCann to load the bags and face Beltran — who responded by lacing a double in the right-centerfield gap, knocking in two runs. He would have cleared the bases, but McCann was nailed at home plate.
  • The Bullpen   Andrew Miller notched his league-leading 13th save, while Dellin Betances earned the win, improving his record to 4-0. Sorry, D-Rob, we love you, brother, but we ain’t missing you yet.
  • Defense   Not a cliché, but a mantra — pitching and defense wins championships. Brett Gardner nailing Manny Machado at the plate in the 1st inning was huge. Helped set the tone for the game.

  • Starter Length   While the Yankees bullpen are preforming at a lights out pace, if they will continue to be tasked to the tune of getting 10+ outs a game, this is a disaster in waiting. No matter if it’s the number one starter or the number five starter, we need to consistently be taking starts into the 7th inning at least.
