The Yankees go for the series clinching win against Tampa this afternoon with their ace on the mound and their offense showing signs of life. It’s wasn’t a home run, but last night’s bases-clearing double by Gary Sanchez was a glimmer of hope. Luis Severino faces Tampa’s Ryne Stanek in game three of the four-game set. After a solid performance from starter Jordan Montgomery — who left with a 4-1 lead, and didn’t deserve a non-decision — the Yankees 2018 home opener was saved by the offense. Luis Severino takes the hill in this afternoon’s series finale.
While some would argue it’s a little over the top to say we need a stopper after back to back managerial (and bullpen) stumbles, I would argue games blown in March and April are the ones you can’t get back in September — when you’re, say, a game or two out of something or other. Get the fantasy MLB skinny on today’s Opening Day matchup in The Bronx between the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.
The good news is that the first place Boston Red Sox finish out their season with four games against the Houston Astros — who are still vying for home field advantage in the postseason. The bad news is Houston is 1-6 in their last seven games at Fenway. Boston’s magic number is 2, while New York’s tragic number is also 2. The difference is still 3 games in the standings but there’s little sense in getting excited about anything until it’s down to one game. Then it gets real interesting. Let’s review some draft possibilities for your lineup.
With a start tonight, Luis Severino will be on schedule to pitch in Monday night’s Wild Card play-in game, presumably against the Minnesota Twins. But — and a big but — the Red Sox might make the pennant race a little more interesting. With their home loss to Toronto last night and New York’s 6-1 win over Tampa their lead is back down to three games with five to play. If the impossible does happen and say the Yankees tie the Sawx, the one-game playoff would take place in Yankee Stadium thanks to New York winning the season series against Boston.
