Brian McCann throws out Jose Altuve attempting to steal second base in the 4th inning at Minute Maid Park on June 28, 2015

Game 76 | 41-35, T-2nd : Once again, the unknown pitcher proves to be Kryptonite for the Yankees. In his first career start against The Bronx Bombers, Astros’ right-hander Collin McHugh cruised through 8 easy innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 8, while retiring 17 of the last 18 batters he faced. The 3-1 victory for Houston split the four game series at two, and again the Yankees failed to gain ground on the Tampa Rays, who were defeated by Boston earlier. The Yanks fell to third place (by percentage points) after Baltimore’s win over Cleveland.

Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

Astros 3, Yankees 1

Here’s when you know it isn’t your day:

  • Michael Pineda   Big Mike pitched well enough to win but took the loss after an 8 inning outing, scattering 7 hits with 8 strikeouts, and allowing only 2 earned runs. With the non-existence of an offense, he had no margin for error.
  • Brian McCann   With his BA coming around, and big hits becoming more frequent, this is the Brian McCann we were expecting. His skills behind the plate have been invaluable — coming into this series with Houston, the Yankees have allowed the lowest amount of steals in MLB. Today he nailed the speedy Jose Altuve at second.
  • Brett Gardner   Despite today’s miscue in left-center (see video above), Gardy had a solid game (1-3 with an RBI), and has raised his BA to .300 thanks his recent tear.

“As a center fielder, I called it and I’ve got to keep going for it. I saw [Garrett Jones] come in late. As hard as he was coming, I figured he wouldn’t hear me and he was going to make the play. It got by us, got between us and it probably should’ve been a double with him getting to second.” ‐ Brett Gardner  (h/t: Bryan Hoch / MLB.com)

FOOTNOTES : The Yankees recalled right-hander Esmil Rogers from Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, on optioned Gregorio Petit back down … Slade Heathcott was also moved to the 60-Day DL …
