Alex Rodriguez drives a solo home run over the Green Monster in left off Clay Buchholz to give the Yankees an early lead at Fenway Park on July 10, 2015

Game 86 | 47-39, 1st : Michael Pineda turned in his third straight solid start for the Yankees, going 6.2 innings while scattering 7 hits and striking out 6 for his 9th win of the season. New York capitalized on poor pitching and sloppy infield play from Boston for a 5-1 victory.
The Red Sox had been on a tear coming in, winning 10 of their last 14 including 4 straight before tonight’s loss. The hot-streak had brought them back into contention, trailing the first place Yankees now by 6 games.

Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 1

  • Michael Pineda   Continuing his rebound from a couple of shaky starts, Big Mike turned in 6.2 innings of masterful mound-work. 7 strikeouts. No walks.
  • Alex Rodriguez   Big shot over the Green Monsta off Boston ace Clay Buchholz in the top of the first, setting the tone for the game.
  • Brett Gardner   New York’s All-Star left-fielder showed why he made the team, with a dazzling catch in left-center, robbing a hit from Pablo Sandoval.

“This group has a good feel to it. It’s a hardworking group, and it competes hard every night. I think the key for us finishing the first half and continuing strong in the second half, is to stay hungry and humble.” ‐ Alex Rodriquez
