GAME 106: There are no words. Here’s a few anyway. The New York Yankees attempt to blow a 6-run lead fell short tonight in Texas. They tried hard however. Texas had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, needing only a single for a walk-off victory. Somehow, it didn’t happen.
Here’s the box score and recap.
Yet another bullpen meltdown — this one including serving up a grand slam to a -200 hitter by Dellin Betances, and closer David Robertson putting Yankees’ fans hearts in their throat in the 9th. Against the worst team in MLB, no less.
POLICE BLOTTER: From today’s NY Daily News: Bronx street sign named for Yankee legend Thurman Munson mysteriously vanishes.
MEMORY LANE: On July 29th, 2005, the Yankees signed Hideo Nomo as a free agent. On this date in 1997, the team traded Mariano Duncan and cash to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor leaguer Angel Ramirez. (Source: Baseball-Reference.com)
July 29th 1978 — A surprise announcement at Old-Timers Day in Yankee Stadium: Billy Martin will return to manage the Yanks the following year. The crowd goes nuts. (Source: Today In Baseball History)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! To Glen Falls, NY-native Dave LaPoint (55), who pitched for the Yankees in the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
