CC, 3 HRs Power Yanks To Sweep

CC Sabathia and Joe Girardi get ejected by the home-plate umpire after the Yankees turn an inning-ending double play at Yankee Stadium on June 7, 2015

Game 57 | 32-25, 2nd : CC Sabathia served up back to back homers to Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in the first inning, but he and the bullpen shut it down from there and the Yanks offense took care of business. Brett Gardner hammered a huge 3-run blast in the 5th, as New York notched their series second sweep of their last three.

Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

Yankees 6, Angels 2

  • CC Sabathia   With Sabathia’s well-documented struggles pitching at home, The Big Man rebounded nicely from a shaky first frame to hold the Halos in check until he was ejected after the 5th inning. In the process he picked up his 2,500th career strikeout, only the 9th lefty in MLB history to reach that mark.
  • “That I’m old, that I’ve been around for a long time. I always say, ‘When I retire, I can look back and say that’s a big deal.’ But right now, I’m just in the middle of the season, and trying to help this team win some games.” ‐ CC Sabathia  (h/t:

  • Brett Gardner   Gardy went yardy for the eventual game winning hit in the bottom of the 5th inning, clubbing a 3-run homer to right off Halos starter CJ Wilson.
  • Jose Pirela   Pirela clubbed his first major league home run in the 7th inning off (pitcher). The ball landed in the Halos bullpen, so it’s a good bet he got to keep it.
  • Chris Young   Young added a solo home run in the good sign that he’s coming around after a prolonged funk at the plate.
