DRAFTKINGS CONTEST : Lineup tips and player salaries are for the MLB Showdown $1K Quarter Jukebox, a ‘Showdown’ rules contest starting at 4:05pm EST, 1:05pm Pacific Time.
THE WISE GUYS : The oddsmakers are digging the team from The Bronx with a moneyline consensus Yankees -133, Mets +123 with an Over/Under of 8.
THE BALLPARK : UPDATE Talk about a swing and a miss! Earlier we had posted Game 1 would be at Citi Field — wrong, both ends of today’s twin bill are indeed at Yankee Stadium! The Mets will be the “home team” in Game 2 at 7:05pm EST. Sorry ’bout that. The Yanks won’t visit Citi until possibly September 3rd, which is a scheduled make up of the August 23rd contest which was postponed.
WEATHER : Game-time temps are expected to be 88° under mostly cloudy skies, winds WSW at 9mph and a 15% chance of wet stuff. The humidity will be 43%.
MATCHUP NOTES : In Game 1, righty Michael Wacha takes the hill for the Mets, against lefty Jordan Montgomery, who has been up and down since coming back from Tommy John surgery.
There is basically no pitcher vs hitter history with Wacha and the Yankees, only Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge have faced him, with 3 ABs apiece. But with a bloated 6.43 ERA across 14 innings, righty hitters are 9-29 (.333), while lefties are 9-36 (.281). Of his 18 Ks, 11 have come against left-hander hitters. Due to concern over shoulder inflammation issues, this will be Wacha’s first start since August 7th. Stacking some pent-up Yankees hitters might not be a bad move.
As for Montgomery, only catcher Wilson Ramos has a history against him, 2-6 (.333). Gumby has been excellent against left-handed batters: 2-19 (.111), while righty’s are getting to him at a .281 clip (16-60). The 3 home runs he’s allowed have all been to right-handed batters. The team is looking for a solid outing from Montgomery — not only to put the brakes on a 5-game losing streak, but to strengthen a very questionable pinstripe rotation going forward.
Gumby’s out pitch so far in 2020 has been a vastly improved change up, which induces a better than league average of ground balls. The Mets have a .253 BA against ground ball pitchers, their lowest versus fly ball, and g/f ball.
Players to Consider The higher value is for drafting that player as ‘team captain’.
- Michael Conforto ($13,500 / $9,000)
- Luke Voit ($14,000 / $9,600)
- Clint Frazier ($12,900 / $8,600)
- Mike Tauchman ($12,000 / $8,000)**
- Wilson Ramos ($9,000 / $6,000)
** Tauchman will not be starting. OF Estevan Florial ($4,000) will be making his major league debut.
PREDICTION : The Subway Series has not been kind to the Mets of late, who have dropped 13 of their last 20 games to the Yankees straight up — and we see little changing for Game 1 against Wacha. If his shoulder barks, he’ll no doubt be on a short leash, so stacking right-handed hitters could provide a bunch of points.
As somebody famous once said “Suzyn, you just can’t predict baseball”, so these tips and observations are pure speculation on our part. That said, best of luck with your lineup and Let’s Go, Yankees!!!
