Alex Rodriguez hits a ground ball through the left side of the infield for the 2,999th hit of his Major League career on June 19, 2015 at Yankee Stadium

Game 66 | 36-30, 2nd : The Yankees split their home-and-home four game series against the Marlins with a 9-4 victory as the offense stepped up in a CC Sabathia start. The Big Man didn’t get the ‘W’, but Brett Gardner‘s 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth knotted the game at 3, taking CC off the hook.
Everyone was invited to the hit parade (15 total) except Stephen Drew, who did knock in a run on a sac fly. Gardner and Carlos Beltran contributed 2-run homers each.

CC was removed after 6 innings, allowing 3 runs while striking out 7 in a no-decision outing. Chasen Shreve, Justin Wilson and Chris Martin held it down from there while the offense produced 8 runs over the final three frames. Shreve (4-1) got the win.
Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights. Also, don’t miss a great post-game wrap by LodHud’s Chad Jennings.

Yankees 9, Marlins 4

  • Alex Rodriguez   A-Rod delivered at the plate, going 2-4 with a walk and RBI, moving him to one short of the career 3,000 hit mark. There was high drama in the bottom of the 8th when Rodriguez came to the plate, but Marlin’s reliever Sam Dyson threw an ‘intentional-unintentional’ walk, missing badly on 4 straight pitches, all way inside almost hitting him. Dyson was booed loud and long by Yankee fans, who chanted ‘@ss-hole’ and ‘you suck’.
  • “I don’t even know how to describe it. It feels great. Every time moments like that happen, I can just reflect on a year ago today.” ‐ Alex Rodriguez  (h/t: AP)

  • Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran   Big home runs by both, especially Gardy whose blast tied the game at 3 and saved CC from a potential loss. Beltran provided the go-ahead blast, his fifth of the season, and the Yankees never looked back.
