GAME 151: Brandon McCarthy pitching and Chase Headley’s defense helped the Yankees avoid a sweep in their final 2014 visit to the House of Horrors. McCarthy also tossed an ‘immaculate’ inning in the 7th — 9 pitches, 9 strikes, 3 outs. McCarthy, Dellin Betances and David Robertson combined for the victory.
GAMENOTES: Dellin Betances broke Marino Rivera‘s strikeout record for relief pitchers (set in 1996 with 130 Ks). 30th win within the division. For comparison, the 2001 Yankees won 51 games against AL East opponents… In a forgettable road trip on more than one level, the Yankees scored a total of 7 runs in the first six games of the trip.
Here’s the box score.
Yankees Must Sign McCarthy for 2015 and Beyond
McCarthy is a must have. He’s an underrated pitcher on the free agent market. Ever since he got his cutter back the man has been lights out.

MEMORY LANE: The Yanks beat the Angels, 6 – 2, to lock on to first place for good with a 2-percentage-point lead over the idle White Sox and O’s. Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle each have three hits. Mantle‘s include his 2,000th career hit and his 450th home run, his 31st of the year. They have won two in a row and will run their win streak to 11 games.
