Carlos Beltran crushes a two-run home run to center field, giving the Yankees a 4-3 lead with his fourth HR of the season on May 30, 2015 in Oakland

Game 50 | 26-24, 1st : This one could have been worse. Much worse. Carlos Beltran provided enough timely hitting to help the defense and pitching close it out, 5-3. Starter Nathan Eovaldi had command and location trouble early on, and lasted only 4.1 innings allowing 11 hits (all singles!) before being lifted.

With 4.1 innings left for the bullpen to do it’s magic, the lineup of Chasen Shreve, Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller kept the A’s scoreless the rest of the way with no runs, 0 walks, 1-hit and 8 strikeouts.

Here’s the box score, full recap, and video highlights.

Yankees 5, A’s 3

  • Carlos Beltran   With his bat really starting to come around, Beltran’s timely hitting led the team to victory. His 2-run shot in the top of the 6th off A’s starter Jesse Hahn was his 4th of season, and the 3 total RBI brought his total to 21.
  • Chase Headley   A huge 2-out RBI single in the top of the 5th inning that closed the close to 3-2 A’s. Headley went 3-5, raising his BA to .256.
  • Chasen Shreve   A lights out relief performance that kept the Bombers in the game. Shreve faced 4 batters and struck them all out on 18 pitches.
  • Ramon Flores   A memorable major league debut for Flores, making a great, sliding catch of a foul pop-up, and nailing a runner at the plate.

“It was exciting, those two plays that I made. I’m proud to play for the Yankees. Thank you to the Yankees for this opportunity. I’m going to try to play hard every day, every time when the manager puts me in the lineup, just play hard.” ‐ Ramon Flores  (h/t: mlb.com)

FOOTNOTES : You know things are going well when the only stolen base of the game is credited to Mark Teixeira, his first of the season … Adam Warren takes the mound tomorrow afternoon for the series finale against Jesse Chavez.
